Asian Water Monitor Biawak

Asian Water Monitor · Java Island, Indonesia

Asian Water Monitor was photographed on September 26, 2022 at 6:30PM in West Java, Indonesia while on a hike near the coast. These incredible creatures have learned to live near humans, similar to the coyotes in America. These lizards belong to Varanus, the second largest lizard genus in the world by mass, trailing only the Komodo dragon. Growing usually to 6', some can reach up to 10'. Powerful jaws and sharp teeth help to procure fish, crabs, rodents, frogs, birds, eggs, smaller reptiles and carrion. Excellent swimmers, able to stay underwater for up to 30 minutes. A formidable opponent and one not to try and corner.
