Dixon's Batwing Butterfly

Dixon's Batwing Butterfly · Java Island, Indonesia

Dixon's Batwing Butterfly from West Java, Indonesia was taken on September 27, 2022 while on a hike in a rainforest. Atrophaneura dixoni is a beautiful toxin-filled creature both in larvae and adult butterfly stages. The bold black and red coloring act as an aposematic warning signal to birds and other predators. To me, the bold coloration is more of an attractant, as my camera and I could not stop snapping its image. Tough to follow in a rainforest where terrain can be challenging. Enjoy, as more are coming!
