Double-crested Cormorant

Double-crested Cormorant · Santa Barbara/Goleta

The photo of this male Double-crested cormorant in non-breading plumage was taken February 19, 2021 in North Goleta on a beautiful sunny winter morning, at 8:42am. Nannopterum auritum use their long slender bill with a sharp hook at tip to grab fish, while the feathers absorb water to help them sink and dive deeper. Commonly seen with wings outstretched to air-dry their feathers in the wind and sun.
